RE: Blue & White

Last week, Andrea of interior design blog The Glam Pad posed a question, inviting her followers to give their opinions on whether the usually infallible combo of blue & white has become too saturated. Upon asking the audience, the million dollar answer appeared to be ... drumroll ... NO, but don't overdo it. A blue and white pairing (done right) is classic, traditional, and crisp, but (and as the Glam Pad noted) when any trend succumbs to overuse and mass-market-hysteria, a type of why-did-I-buy-that-then-if-looking-at-it-now-makes-my-eyes-roll buyer's remorse can set in.

The same can be said of fashion trends - I am no stranger to that "what was I thinking?" feeling when thumbing through the nether-regions of my closet or flipping through photos of yesteryear's glory days. Which is why Andrea's candid counsel struck so close to home: "succumbing to trends is a very expensive cycle carefully calculated to drain your pocketbook." In other words, buyer beware. But her parting words also left me, in my self-appointed role of ensemble assembler, both focused and motivated. She wrote, "[b]e judicious with your purchases, and invest in the best you can afford with the intention of keeping your treasures for a lifetime."

I don't think my husband would necessarily characterize me as judicious with my shopping habit, but I do go through a mental exercise of sorts when I expand my wardrobe or put these collages together. Basically I ask myself the following: 1) would I still wear this as a grandma? (surprisingly, many times the answer is hellz yeah), 2) is this something my future daughters will fight over one day?, 3) will this get so much use that it will eventually fall apart? and 4) will looking back at a photo of me wearing this make me smile when I look like a prune? As long as 50% of the answers to the aforementioned are a yes, then whatever I'm debating buying is #worthit in my measly opinion.

And so, dear reader, I align myself with the same advice The Glam Pad gave: "most importantly, buy what you truly love, and you can never go wrong." I love blue and white, I love pairing blue and white with gold, and sometimes I lurve looking like a human chinoiserie - and if you do too, this collage is for you.

9 to 5 Valentine

Over the Moon asked me to pull some festive-yet-office-appropriate looks for the upcoming holiday, since the majority of us (myself included) will be spending most of next Wednesday on the clock. Is there a better way to spend Lov-ahs Day than showing off how much you love the holiday, yourself, and your co-workers with some on-theme attire? Sure there is - but we'll save that part for when we leave the office.

Denim For Days

I have a distinct memory from fall of 2007: the setting is the first year dorms at the University of Virginia and center stage is my father, new to the dropping-daughter off at college thing, offering to help with the move-in/unpacking fandango. He is sweating (no air conditioning - tradition is kept alive at dear ole' UVA!) and appears bewildered as he pulls pair after pair of jeans out of a suitcase. He reaches a point of exasperation, at which he exclaims "how many pairs of jeans do you own?!" (that's the PG-version). From stage left enters the rest of my family (mom & sisters), who basically give him a few "where have you been this whole time, George?" lines. The scene ends, with the narrator's closing: "And that was the first and only time our protagonist helped move any of his daughters to college."

The girl (me) loves her denim. So when a friend recently asked me to style some casual, jean-friendly looks that could easily be incorporated in a day-to-day wardrobe, I thought genius! And then I thought, maybe I need another pair of jeans...

Valentine's Contemplations: Be the Shoebox

Anyone remember the elementary school assignment of bringing in a shoebox that you would then decorate to be a Valentine's mailbox? It was a pink and red and glitter-fied receptacle of sugar, and I loved it. I'm not sure if this tradition still continues in today's no-holiday-is-politically-correct environment, but I hope it does.

As an adult, Valentine's Day can be an eyeroll-inducing holiday and it feels like you're titter-tottering between the pricey prix fixe dinner ending with a lame dessert with hearts on it and surrounded by cheesy couples that leave you (terrified) asking "are we one of them?" thing and the let's just blow this lame holiday off and not do gifts this year because love is the opposite of buying into this commercialized forced romance thing. Both extremes are, simply put, the worst

Which leads me to my suggestion, which obviously aligns with the maxim of leave no holiday behind. There is a magic to Valentine's Day - it's the awe and wonder and giddiness you remember feeling as a child when your classmates would drop candy and Eckerds-bought Valentine's Day cards into the shoebox you poured your blood, sweat, and glitter tears into. Bring back that magic by becoming the shoebox. In other words, dear reader, be pink and red and glitter-fied (by dressing as such) and consume all the sugar and love your heart desires. Today's post gets you halfway there - the rest of operation celebrate-love-in-a-hopeless-place is up to you

Technicolored Dream Coats

Over the Moon asked me to find some fun, funky, fabulous, fur/faux coats, and these were the chosen ones. Because sometimes the only way to get jazzed up about it still being really frio outside is to leave the black/grey puffer at home and jazz up your coat game. Bonus points for most of these being on sale, so that we preempt winter 2018 #earlybirdgetstheoutwearworm, right? Right!
